Surprisingly, more than 50% of all construction-related deaths take place on private property during alteration and repair work. These jobs are considered low risk, so less safety and health measures are taken. Construction jobs employ approximately 6% of U.S. workers, but 17% of the fatalities - the largest percentage of fatalities reported for any industry sector. In 2014, the United States had 4,679 fatal occupational injuries, with an incidence rate of 3.3 per 100,000 full-time employed workers. In that same year, fatal work injuries in construction and extraction occupations increased by 5%.
